- Brief Description: Scheduled Monument: One of a group of burial mounds of probable Bronze Age date on the Long Mynd.
- Description: Remains of a heather covered round barrow, 7.5m in diameter, 0.4m high, the SW side cut away by a footpath, and dug into on the NE side. No visible remains of a ditch. OS FI 1972 <1>
The remains of a tumulus, consisting of a mound some 20ft across with a depressed centre, lie at the highest point of the road to Ratlinghope. The greater portion of it has apparently been cut away in making the road <2a>
Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, Low score as one of 93 Bowl Barrows <3>
The monument includes the remains of a small bowl barrow situated on the high point of a rounded prominence on The Long Mynd. The barrow is visible as an oval mound 8.5m north-west to south-east by 7m transversely and stands up to 0.9m high. The south-western side has been cut by the line of the metalled road crossing the hill top at this point and the central area of the mound is hollowed to a depth of 0.4m as a result of exploration at sometime in the past. Although no longer visible as a surface feature, a ditch, from which material was quarried during the construction of the monument, surrounds the mound. This has been destroyed around the south-west side by the construction of the roadway but will survive around the remainder of the barrow as a buried feature some 1.5m wide <4>
The receipt of a field monument warden's report dating to 1985 [<2>] had caused the SMR to record this site as a scheduled monument. However, the scheduling notice issued by English Heritage in October 1993 [<4>] did not refer to the site having been scheduled previously. PAW comment. 4/11/93 <5>
