- Brief Description: Scheduled Monument and Listed Building: A rare surviving example of an engine house containing dual purpose pumping and winding gear, the Ladywell lead mine engine house is itself relatively late in date (late 19th century), but it forms part of an extensive mining landscape containing earlier features.
- Description: Remains of engine house. Late C19. Roughly coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings to angles and window surrounds; now roofless. Rectangular plan. 3 levels; remains of round-headed opening on south-east side. Associated with former local lead mining industry and forms a prominent feature in the landscape. Buildings of England p242 <2>
-> Scheduled in 1998. Scheduling description: ->
-> The monument is situated approximately 900m WNW of the village of Shelve and includes the ruins, which are Listed Grade II, and buried remains of the engine house at Ladywell lead mine. ->
-> The mine is believed to have been worked in the early 19th century but the engine house and a new engine shaft were not constructed until the 1870s. The mine, however, was never a large producer of ore, failing to make a profit, and thus closed in c1882. ->
-> The ruined engine house is built of roughly coursed stone rubble with brick dressings to the corners and window surrounds and is considered to have housed an engine which could be used for both pumping and winding. A round headed, vertical opening or slot in the south western or bob wall of the building originally housed the flywheel which transmitted the motion of the pumping engine into rotational movement for winding. Immediately adjacent to the north west wall of the engine house are the partly infilled remains of a stone-lined channel or pit where the winding drum would have been located. This feature runs south westwards as far as the capped shaft which is also included in the scheduling. <4>

When surveyed as part of a report of South Shropshire lead mines in 1997, the Ladywell mine engine house [PRN 13701] in urgent need of repairs to prevent its collapse. Four walls of the engine house remain although the roof is missing. The building is 7m x 5m x approximately 7m high. The wall thickness varies from 0.9m to 1.2m. The walls are constructed in random stonework with brick quoins. <6>
