  • Brief Description: The site of a post medieval hall, burnt down in 1918.
  • Description: Park Hall, a building of possibly C16/ C17 date, was burnt down in 1918 <1a>

Area covered by modern development. OS FI 1967 <1>

Area photographed in aerial survey in 2007. <3>

Park Hall was handed over to the military for use at the outbreak of the First World War and an army camp was constructed in the grounds in 1915 (PRN 21713). The hall was destroyed by fire on Boxing Day 1918. <4>

A figure of Neptune in the central panel of the dining room ceiling was of the highest standard and almost certainly not of local origin. <5>

Description from Country Life, dated 1905. Purchased by Francis Charlton in 1717…when he bought the place, it had a summer house and a raised terrace, a pigeon house and a gatehouse; and there was a remarkable sun-dial, including not less than seven dials, on the terrace, dated 1578…These features were later sold/disappeared…The splendid plaster ceiling of the dining-room, with Neptune riding the waves, belongs to about this time, and is a very remarkable example of the skill probably of some Italian craftsmen. The carved mantel piece with double ionic columns and adornments, harmonises well with the rich paneling and the splendid old furniture of the room. <6>

The largest and most spectacular timber-framed house in the county, built c.1600 for Thomas Powell and extended in 1889 by T.M. Lockwood. <7>
