  • Brief Description: One of a number of mine shafts driven in the 18th century at the Bog Mine.
  • Description: In 1982/83 Wardell Armstrong carried out remedial safety work on the mining remains at Bog during the course of which various details and photographs were recorded for a number of shafts. Engline Shaft was found to be 1180 feet deep and inclined below the Boat Level. The work also discovered various small culverts thought to have supplied water to and from the steam engine. The report includes six photographs including the shaft at the base of the exaction and views along the small culverts. The report also includes a series of large scale plans (1:500) e.g. the locations of disused and demolished buildings, mines and surface features, the extent of the recorded workings at Bog Mine and details of the safety work made to shafts including shaft No. 1 – Engine Shaft. Photographs 1 to 6 included in the report. <1>

In 1983 two days were spent undertaking a watching brief at Bog Mine which noted that Engine Shaft was the largest uncovered and contained the best preserved remains. The size and construction of the shaft is recorded, together with the remains of associated pumping engines. There are a series of around 20+ photographs of the features of Engine Shaft uncovered during the safety works. <2>
