Site Of Lydamheath Station

  • Larger Image
  • HER Number (PRN): 28374
  • Site Name : Site Of Lydamheath Station
  • Monument Type:
    • Railway Station (Mid 19th century to 20th century (inter-war))
  • Civil Parish:
    • Bishop's Castle , South Shropshire, Shropshire
  • Grid Reference: SO 3460 9057
  • Brief Description: Structural and/or below ground remains of Lydamheath Station, including possible remains of a station building and cattle pens. Much of the historic fabric may have been removed by late 20th century development of the site as a depot.
  • Description: Lydamheath Station depicted on both the 1st edition 1:10560 OS map of the late 19th century and 2nd edition 1:2500 OS map of the early 20th century; the latter clearly indicating a station building to south of the tracks and cattle pens to the north.<1><2>

A number of late 20th century buildings forming a depot, and surrounded by a perimeter wall, are indicated on vertical aerial photography dating to 2002.<3>

Later vertical aerial photography indicates much of the late 20th century infrastructure was removed by 2009, although some building footprints are still visible. The extent of historic structures on site is unknown. <4>

Lydham Heath Station opened on 24/10/1865 and closed 20/4/1935. Originally to be the junction station on the 'main' line for the short Bishop Castle branch. However, main line to W was never built. Trains usually had to reverse to Bishop Castle from here, or the locomotive would run round its train before carrying on. Single stone platform S of the line with small wooden shelter; loop line. Station building rebuilt in 1906. <5>

Photograph taken 3rd July 2017. By this date the site was totally cleared with just one or two abandoned(?) road going heavy goods tailers. <6>
