  • Brief Description: Scheduled Monument: The earthworks of a deserted medieval village and part of its field system.
  • Description: Fields around the Heath Chapel (Norman) (PRN 00975) contain DMV earthworks. Stone lined well in field north of chapel. Seven taxable families in 1327, only four tenements by 1770. Map of 1771 shows detail of earlier village plan and fields. Plan of Heath in 1770 shows that the road pattern, fishponds and earthworks to the north of the chapel, called Moat Meadow (SA 2983) were still in existence. The "Wynet" open field can be identified on the ground today in the form of ridge and furrow. Heath Park, originally a deer park, appears as a compact enclosed holding. <5>

The surviving earthworks cover an area of approximately 4 hectares, now under grass, immediately NW of Heath Chapel, and including the present burial ground. There are at least five possible building platforms, and the holloways have a maximum depth of c 0.9m. At SO55748565 there is a circular stone lined well, measuring 1m in diameter, and 4.8m deep to the present water level. A holloway 10m wide, and up to 1.4m deep, runs NW from the NE corner of the settlement along the edge of the field. There are slight traces of earthworks between the settlement and the holloway, which appear to have been ploughed down in modern times. The holloway turns to the SW and joins the modern road. At SO55498567 are the remains of a flat-topped pond bay measuring 40m in length, 14m in width and up to 1.6m in height. Heath Park is defined only by modern field boundaries. OS FI 1979 <1>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1: High score as one of 58 DMVs; High score as one of 91 Irregular Open Field Systems; one of less than 10 Deer Parks <19>

Two post-holes and a shallow trench were cut for a new gate alongside the existing field gate. The post holes were excavated to 400mm diameter by up to 700mm deep, connected by a sill trench 200mm wide by 300mm deep. The post holes and sill trench were cut through a topsoil of a dark reddish brown clay loam c. 450mm thick which came down onto a subsoil of dark reddish brown clay silt. No significant archaeological features were seen in the excavations. <21>

Photographed during aerial survey in 2008. <22><23><24>

Visited during a condition survey by the English Heritage Field Monument Warden, in 1994. Condition recorded as fair, but the past management agreement has only been partially successful. <25>

Photographed during aerial survey in 2019. <26>

Extent of GIS polygon significantly extended to the S to reflect the extent of settlement earthworks which were identified by <8>, and which are partially evident on LiDAR imagery and aerial photography. The extent southwards should be viewed as indicative only, as it is unclear the extent to which these earthworks were surveyed or sketched. <27><27a><27b>

Geophysical survey (magnetometry) was carried out in two fields to the N and E of Heath Chapel in June 2019. The results were limited, but a number of anomalies were recorded across earthwork features, taken to be a product of a 'topographic effect' on the magnetomaters as they were carried across these features. <28>
